Hope and Healing For The New Year

Posted: January 4, 2017
By: Dr. Robert Rosenbaum

Every new year we always make a list of resolutions that we hope to aspire to. Most times if we're lucky we might commit to one or two of them, but this year lets shift that focus to health and hope. We hope for a healthy mind and body. Many of us hope for meaningful relationships and the abundance to live, give and enjoy the good things in life. We hope these things for our loved ones, too.

What happens when something changes in our lives and hope is hard to muster? What can we do when we are faced with many challenges at the same time and we find ourselves feeling hopeless?

The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness by Jerome Groopman, MD discusses those living in “extreme circumstances” as having a hope that “assesses all of the obstacles, all of the problems, all the potential for failure” and still “sees a path to the future”.1 Research demonstrates the healing power of hope and how it can impact pain levels, respiratory problems, heart attack outcomes and Parkinson’s disease by stimulating neurochemical changes in the brain.2

Hoping is a healthy way to cope with daily stressors and the unexpected. Set your mind to believe that things will get better. Take action steps to do something different to make the rest of today and tomorrow better. Think positive thoughts. Consciously choose to spend your time, energy and resources in ways that agree with your goals. Take care for your body so you have the energy and attitude to be at your best. No matter your current situation, it is not too late to start.

Chiropractic patients present with a wide variety of conditions and goals for care. Some people come in seeking care for a crisis, seeking chiropractic care as a last resort. Children come in because their parents want them to have the advantage of growing up with an optimally functioning spine and nervous system. Athletes want to keep their body mechanics working at peak levels so that they can heal faster, avoid injuries and enjoy their sport for as long as possible.  Some people are concerned about chronic conditions that are draining their bank accounts and causing them physical, mental and social suffering. They want a drug-free, non-surgical solution that will address the root cause of their health problems.

What should you do if you or a loved one has been hopeless about your health or potential to heal? As long as you are alive and breathing and there is life flowing over your nervous system be hopeful and consider giving chiropractic care a chance to work for you. A chiropractic examination will be able to identify whether or not there is interference to the function of your nervous system that may be affecting your health on many levels. Chiropractic care can help your body and mind to function better and you will learn to think differently about your health decisions. Your hope combined with the chiropractic techniques and lifestyle suggestions we offer can make the difference.

If you are suffering from acute or chronic pain, have been diagnosed with a severe condition, are feeling discouraged or stressed, there is hope. Make the health of your nervous system a priority. Your hope and personal commitment can make all the difference. Anyone within the Crosby, Huffman, Baytown, or surrounding areas give our office a call today and get your year off to the best start!

Highlands and Crosby Area Are You Living Your Fullest Potential?

By: Dr. Robert Rosenbaum

If your personal journey of health and well-being was a story that lasted 100 healthy years or more, who would be the hero of this story? Who would be the villain if you did not live these quality years and instead lived a deteriorating life to 60 or 70? Understanding the hero and the villain will help you make choices that ensure that you and your loved ones live an active, healthy life and express your full potential throughout your lifetime.

The hero of this story is your Innate Intelligence. Your body has within it an Innate Intelligence that, from the moment of conception, strives to keep you functioning at your best. From the moment you were conceived, one cell grew into over eighty quadrillion cells without any direction from a doctor, drug, or research.

Your brain and spinal cord were placed in protective casings of bone for safety as they are the most important systems in your body. Your heart was placed in the center of your chest, an efficient location to distribute oxygen, nutrients and waste products to their proper locations with great efficiency.

Your Innate Intelligence knew how tall you were going to be before you were born and was equipped with the resources to digest your food and adapt you to your environment. As long as your Innate Intelligence is free to express itself, then you would have a great chance of expressing your full potential for eighty, ninety, a hundred years and beyond.

The villain in this story is anything that interferes with the expression of your Innate Intelligence.

Nerve interference or lifestyle interference can reduce your body’s innate ability to communicate or regulate itself. It is very common during the birth process for a baby’s spine to be injured, especially in the upper neck, which can reduce nerve transmission over the spinal cord and nervous system. This type of nerve interference can result in immediate symptoms like colic, constipation, diarrhea, allergies or other problems or it may lie dormant for decades until your body can no longer adapt.

Nerve interference can occur during childhood through sports injuries, childhood falls and poor nutrition, again, causing numerous symptoms or lying dormant and asymptomatic for decades. Car accidents, falling down the stairs, weight gains or losses and emotional stress are just some of the additional causes of nerve interference.

Lifestyle interference can also alter the expression of your body’s Innate Intelligence and resulting in nerve interference, sickness and disease. Lifestyle interference includes poor diet, being overweight, eating excessive amounts of sugar and caffeine, taking drugs, poor posture and stress. Interference is the villain of this story, your story, because it robs your body and mind of your true innate potential.

A chiropractor delivering the message of The 100 Year Lifestyle will do everything they can to nurture your hero and eliminate this villain from your life, and keep it out of your life for the rest of your life, so that you and your loved ones can enjoy the quality of life you deserve. By nurturing your Innate Intelligence and expressing your full potential and you will enjoy health for a lifetime. Give us a call today if you are in the Crosby, Highlands or surrounding areas so Dr. Rosenbaum can get you on your path to wellness!

Four Healthy Holiday Tips for the Crosby and Highland Areas

Posted: November 30, 2016
By: Dr. Robert Rosenbaum

If you, your family and your friends are healthy, consider it a blessing. The opportunity to gather and enjoy each other’s company without the worry or burden of suffering loved ones contributes greatly to a healthier holiday season. If you and your loved ones fall into this category, consider taking your health to new levels.

Healthy Activity

When faced with choices between healthy foods and unhealthy foods, choose the healthy ones. Make exercise your first priority by exercising first thing in the morning so that you do not get swept away by holiday activities and miss out on your workout. Schedule your chiropractic adjustments in advance so your nervous system stays healthy and your body is more resistant to stress.

  Healthy Planning

When you are making plans to gather with family and friends, do not just make appointments to gather around food and drink. Gather around going for walks in the woods or hikes in the mountains or on the trails. Gather around fresh air and sunshine. If the sun is not out or the weather is bad in your area, take a fitness class together. If you have young children, this will help them to build healthy habits and values that can last a lifetime. Encourage house guests to pack clothing and shoes for these kinds of activities.

Healthy Eating

When planning your holiday meals, experiment with healthy recipes. Look for dishes that call for fresh ingredients. Download five or six recipes from your favorite cooking website and have the people you will be gathering with do the same. Talk about them and decide which ones to experiment with. Each year you can experiment with new recipes.

Mix in a new, fresh, healthy recipe with the other foods that you like to eat and bring balance to your holiday meals, making them less destructive to your body. Before you know it, your holiday meals will become both delicious and healthy while helping you get off the weight loss, weight gain rollercoaster ride that has been a plague for so many people. You will leave your holiday table guilt-free and empowered.

Healthy Gift Giving

Healthy gift giving can change a life. Many people are turning to healthy gift giving as a way to say, “I love you, I care about you, your health is important to me.” Your willingness to invest in the well-being of those that you love can go a long way to inspiring them to choose to invest in it. This action on your part can even act as an intervention to someone who is really in trouble and in denial about their health.

Healthy gifts can include a gym membership, exercise shoes, a heart monitor, a chiropractic examination or a series of chiropractic adjustments. While so many gifts are forgotten within 30 days, healthy gifts can be life changing and may be remembered for a lifetime.

If you or any of your friends or family members are experiencing pain or ill health of any kind this holiday season, this is all the more reason to make healthy choices a priority. By following these guidelines and removing pressure from the spine and nervous system with chiropractic care, this holiday season can become an opportunity to embrace a healing path and a healthier New Year.

The Crosby and Highland areas deserve to be healthy and express their full potential from the time they are born through their last breath of life. This includes you and your loved ones. We hope that you enjoy the healthiest, happiest holiday season ever.

Crosby and Huffman Do You Know The Difference Between Acute and Chronic Injuries

Posted: October 26, 2016
By: Dr. Robert Rosenbaum

Acute injuries can occur from slips, falls, household chores, accidents, sports, trauma, car wrecks and work injuries to name a few. In extreme or life threatening cases, the injury could require the attention of paramedics or an emergency room physician and you should take this action step immediately.

However, many acute injuries such as strains, bruises, and whiplash can heal quickly with chiropractic care which helps the body to heal itself. Getting the nerve system healthy is an important first step towards beginning and optimizing the healing process. If the acute injury has a nerve and spinal component, and this component is not addressed, acute injuries can become chronic and affect your health for a lifetime.

Chronic injuries are those that cause discomfort and dis-ease over a long time causing deterioration in the spine and nervous system. This type of injury can lead to serious long-term health problems.

Chronic conditions may have been caused by an acute problem earlier on in life. You may have dismissed the original injury as no big deal. The pain has dissipated or been masked so the cause of the problem is now ignored.  We frequently see people in our practice who have deterioration of their spine and nervous system who may not be bothered by the pain any longer, but instead, they have conditions related to organs and systems that are beginning to malfunction. Over time and left uncorrected, these conditions can worsen.

Age is not the only factor in the seriousness of the chronic injury. Infants and children are just as likely to experience troublesome conditions as a 35 year old professional football player. It is not uncommon to see a child who had a traumatic birth develop asthma, allergies or headaches later on in life. Childhood falls while learning to walk or playing on the playground can come back to cause more serious conditions during or after a growth spurt.

You may be reading this after trying several medications and seeing more than one type of doctor for an acute or chronic condition.Chiropractic care may be just the thing your body needs to help you make a comeback to pre-injury health status or beyond.

People of Crosby, Huffman and Baytown areas don’t let an acute injury become chronic, and don’t let a chronic injury limit your quality of life. A healthy spine and nervous system is vital to healing no matter what the condition or length of time you have had it. Before your condition becomes more chronic than it is right now get it checked out. Call our office today and book your appointment to get your spine checked.

Crosby - Huffman residents find out about Subluxation Degeneration

Posted: October 12, 2016
By: Robert Rosenbaum

Understanding the ongoing process of subluxation, and the effect subluxations play on the structures of the spine.

This is a representation of one type of subluxation.  When a subluxation occurs it causes nerve interference in some portion of the body affected by those nerves.  The subluxation also causes changes to the spinal structures as well as the nerves.  These changes get progressively worse as time is allowed to work on the subluxated area of the spine.  These changes take the form of ongoing degeneration known as "Subluxation Degeneration".  By understanding the type and amount of changes, it is possible to reasonably estimate the time subluxations have been present in a spine.  Having this information is useful in understanding the time and effort needed for correction.  Below are explanations of each of the phases of Subluxation Degeneration.

Near Normal

This is a side x-ray view of the neck.  As with all the pictures you will see on this page, the patient is looking to the right of the screen, so you are viewing the right side of their neck.  We will call this picture a "near normal" spine.  Compare this spine with the ones you will see below on this page.  Notice the normal forward curve of the neck.  This curve helps absorb shock.  Notice how each of the disc spaces between C2 (second bone in neck) and C7 are thick and even, this again is normal.  Also notice how the front portions (right on the x-ray) of each of the vertebrae (called the 'body' of the vertebrae) are fairly square with clear and well defined borders. This type of arrangement is normal in the neck.  Normal vertebrae in other parts of the spine also have similar characteristics to what we see here. When subluxations occur and are left uncorrected, ongoing relentless changes occur that result in damage to the structure and function of the spine along with nerve damage and the resulting problems caused from improper nerve supply.

Phase One Subluxation Degeneration

Phase One Subluxation Degeneration is seen in subluxations that have been present for up to twenty years.  This phase is characterized with a loss or change in the normal curve in the spine.  On this example you can see that the normal forward (lordotic) curve is lost.  This spine even has developed a reverse curve in the neck.  The disc spaces have also begun to exhibit a slight change in shape.  One good point is that the bodies of each of the vertebrae (the square part in front) still exhibits clean clear borders.  Segmental motion  may be abnormal but overall motion is probably not affected.  Chiropractic reconstructive care for a phase one can take from 6 to 18 months.  More than 80% of people with Phase One Subluxation Degeneration have no pain.  Therefore, if left uncorrected, phase one continues to progress with time until it eventually reaches the next phase.

Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration

Phase two subluxation degeneration is normally seen in subluxations that have been present between 20 and 40 years.  This phase has some of the same characteristics of the previous phase including a loss of normal curvature and position as well as an alteration in segmental motion.  In addition, spines with Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration many times show a reduction in the patient's range of motion in that area.  X-rays of a phase two begin to show calcium changes or buildup at certain levels of the spine.  These changes are sometimes called by many names including spurs and arthritis.  Disc spaces between the affected vertebrae are noticeably narrower and may appear to be flattening out.  Although most people with Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration may not exhibit any symptoms, some may start to feel stiff or achy.  Chiropractic reconstructive care for patients in phase two ranges from 1.5 years to 2.5 years.  Again, if Phase Two Subluxation Degeneration is left uncorrected it slowly advances to the next phase.

Phase Three  Subluxation Degeneration

Phase Three Subluxation Degeneration is caused by subluxations that have been continuing on for between 40 and 65 years.  This phase has all of the attributes of the previous phases, only worse.  The curvatures are abnormal, the disc spaces are vastly decreased and changed.  Calcium changes on the spine are abundant in this phase.  Normally, people in phase three have a restricted range of motion and probably exhibit symptoms of some kind.  In phase three the vertebrae show obvious changes and mutations in shape.  Projections made of calcium, sometimes referred to as "spurs or lipping", can be readily seen on x-ray.  Chiropractic reconstructive care for patients in phase three ranges from 2.5 years to 3.5 years.  This does not mean that at the end of this time that any or all of the calcium changes will be gone.  In many instances the body adapts to the presence of the calcium and positive changes can only be measured from a functional standpoint.  As before, if Phase Three Subluxation Degeneration is left unchecked it slowly advances onward into the next phase.

Phase Four Subluxation Degeneration

Phase four subluxation degeneration is seen with subluxations that have been raging on uncorrected or altered for over sixty five years.  Phase four is a grave condition that will negatively affect the patients longevity and quality of life.  The massive amount of neurological damage caused by years of subluxation that have lead to phase four are probably taking a serious toll on this person's health status.  X-rays in phase four show serious severe structural changes.  Vertebrae exhibit massive calcium changes, disc spaces appear blurred, and the bones themselves appear fused.  In this scenario the patient will have a severe restriction of range of motion in addition to probably a number of other health issues.  Reconstruction may not be possible in phase four, but care can be directed to some reduction in subluxation with the goal of improvement in the quality of life remaining.  Patients in Phase Four Subluxation Degeneration have a serious situation both structurally and neurologically, but they are certainly not beyond hope.  Many patients in phase four report significant improvements in symptoms, conditions, mobility and quality of life.

It should be noted that the above are common guidelines and not hard rules.  Every person is dynamic and different.  People degenerate at different rates and heal at different rates.  The further along your spine may be with subluxation degeneration the more strenuous and time consuming your road to improvement will be.  For this reason we always stress early care to stop and prevent the advancement of subluxation degeneration.  Of course, if you're not under chiropractic care, the best time to start is NOW! Is you are in the Crosby, Huffman, Highlands or Baytown area give our office a call today!

Are concussions an issue for our young Crosby athletes?

Posted: October 5, 2016
By: Dr. Robert Rosenbaum

The Concussion movie starring Will Smith and Alec Baldwin is raising awareness and important concerns for many victims of this misunderstood condition. If you are, or know, an athlete or accident victim who has experienced a brain injury through concussion, then you know the impact it can have on health and quality of life. Headaches, neck pain, memory loss and depression are just a few of the many symptoms that can occur and the severity can range from mild to severe.

We want you to enjoy everyday of your 100 Year Lifestyle as much as possible! We recommend Chiropractic care as an important part of the care that you receive as quickly as possible after a concussion injury occurs. Topics in Integrative Healthcare recently released a report regarding SRC (sports-related concussion) and the benefits of chiropractic care for the injury. “A short course of cervical manipulation (adjustments) and upper thoracic manipulation was suggested and applied.  The patient noted significant symptomatic relief after the second treatment and virtually complete resolution of symptoms after 5 visits performed over 2 weeks.” Unfortunately, there are a high number of young athletes that do not seek care who experience longer periods of impairment and delay in their return to play.

There are many chiropractic techniques to help accelerate healing of a concussion injury. These techniques analyze how the brain is communicating with the body over the nervous system and make corrections to get the brain and body functioning better.

An examination of the neck is extremely important for patients who suffer from concussions. If you have received a trauma that is hard enough to injure your head and brain, it’s likely to also have caused injury to the neck. Depending on the extent and severity of the injury, results vary for each person. Regardless, it is important to include chiropractic evaluation and adjustment protocols to ensure the possibility of optimal healing and return to normal function.

Each year, 1.6 – 3.8 million sports-related brain injuries occur, 136,000 of them in young athletes during high school sports 1. Traditional methods alone can limit the possibilities of healing and delay return to normal function.

If you or a loved one has had a concussion, schedule a time to get your spine and nervous system checked by us today. If you live near or around the Crosby, Huffman, Baytown or Highland areas give us a call today and we'll get you set up to get your spine checked. It's never to early for our young athletes to be examined for great spine health, and it's never too late to turn around your health.

10. The straw will break the camel’s back

We’ve all heard the expression “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” This is true for too many people who ignore minor spinal problems. One day they do something silly, like bend down to tie their shoe and they can’t get up. Major problems are much more painful and expensive to care for, and they can ruin your life forever.

 9. The times that you need your spine the most will be the time that it will tend to give out on you

If you neglect your spine, you can be sure that when you need it the most due to stress, physical activity, business travel, vacation or even a big game, it might give out on you. Extra stress on a weak spine and nervous system can overload it during your most important life events. Regular adjustments as a part of your lifestyle can keep you healthy and prevent these inconvenient episodes from putting a damper on your life.

8. Nerve pressure can exist without pain

According to the research, pain is not a good indicator of how healthy or unhealthy your spine is. Spinal examinations such as posture, weight balance, palpation, muscle testing, computer scans and x-rays are much better indicators. Pain is usually the last to show up and the first to be relieved when you begin chiropractic care.

 7. Nerves supply your whole body

Your spine protects your nerve system, the master control center of your body. Vital energy flows over your nerves and communications with every cell. Nerve pathways must be clear for the messages to get through. If you have an uncorrected spinal problem, it can cause a decrease in the function of vital organs and systems, and lead to severe problems.

6. Deterioration can begin within 2 weeks

The birth process is often when the first spinal injury occurs. Think about how many two weeks have passed since you were born. Researchers found that when the spine is misaligned it can begin to deteriorate within 2 weeks. How many two weeks are there from a childhood fall to age 50? Is it any wonder why more than 15 million people are diagnosed with osteoarthritis each year?

5. Grandma and Grandpa didn’t get crooked overnight. They grew that way over time

This goes along with number 6. Over time, the spine and nervous system deteriorates, not because of age, but because of subluxations. Just like the tires on your car wear down unevenly when they are misaligned, the same can happen in your spine. You may have some areas in your spine that look like they are 80 years old while you have other areas that are more like a 30 year old. You can keep your entire spine healthy longer with chiropractic Lifestyle Care.

4. Your quality of life depends on a healthy spine

If you want to be healthy and active as you age, your spine and nervous system must be healthy. Period.

3. Good posture keeps you young and attractive

When your body becomes bent over and crooked, you will look and feel old and decrepit. If you keep your posture and your spine straight and strong, you will stay healthy, young and attractive. Many people attempt to use facelifts to preserve their youthful appearance as they age. A facelift would look silly on a person whose spine was neglected.

2. You can’t afford to get sick or injured

Now more than ever, you cannot afford to get sick. Crisis care costs are astronomical and an unhealthy spine and nervous system can be the cause of so many problems.

What Huffman Texas Residents Think of Neck Pain Manipulation vs Other Treatments

Posted: July 20, 2016
By: Dr Rob Rosenbaum

Mechanical neck pain affects an estimated 70% of people at some point in their lives. Many different treatment approaches are available for neck pain, making it difficult for those suffering from neck pain to know which treatment approach(es) to choose. Research in this topic has revealed some very interesting information that places chiropractic and spinal manipulation in a VERY STRONG POSITION - in fact, at the TOP OF THE HEAP!

One such study looked at benefits of spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) in patients with acute and subacute neck pain. This study compared three study group: 1. SMT only, 2. medication only, and 3. Home exercise and advice (HEA). This study randomized 272 neck pain patients suffering from neck pain for 2 to 12 weeks into a 12 week treatment period using  1 of the 3 treatment approaches tracking the results with the participant-rated pain as the primary treatment outcome measure. Secondary outcome data was obtained from other approaches. The results showed that the group treatd with SMT, "...had a statistical advantage over medication after 8, 12, 26 and 52 weeks. HEA also had a statistical advantage over medication. Lastly, similar benefits were calculated between the SMT and exercise group. The Conclustions upport SMT and exercise/advise to be the choice over medication for acute and subacute neck pain patients. Regarding exercise, a similar study showed that "high-dosed supervised strengthening exercise" with and without SMT, was superior to a "low dose home mobilization exercise and advice group at 4, 12, 26, and 52 weeks"

Regarding chronic neck pain patients (that means pain that has been present for greater than 3 months), this study evaluated the changes that occurred in 191 patients. These patients ere randomized to 11 weeks of 1 of 3 treatment groups and evaluated at 3, 6, 12, & 24 months after treatment. The 3 treatment options included: 1. Spinal manipuative therapy (SMT) only, 2. SMT treatment with low-tech neck exercises, or 3. A form of exercises using a MedX rehab machine. The results support the highest level of satisfaction was found in the 2nd group (SMT with low-tech exercise), suggesting that when patients present for treatment, spinal manipulation with low-tech exercises results in the most satisified patient. These findings are important as this tudy evaluated the LONG-TERM benefits in patients who have had neck pain for a long time  (i.e., "chronic"), where most studies only look at the short-term benefits.

Similar conclusions were reported from perhaps the largest scale study on neck pain based on research from 1980 to 2006 on the use, effectiveness and safety of noninvasive treatment approaches for neck pain and associated disorders. Their review of over 350 articles supported manual therapy (manipulation and mobilzation) and supervised exercise to again, SHINE in their conclusions.

What is important is that ALL these studies support what chiropractors do: manipulate the neck and give supervised exercises! So, what are you waiting for? SPREAD THE WORD to everyone that you know who has neck pain -- CHIROPRACTIC MAY BE THE BEST CHOICE!!!

Crosby-Huffman Highlands it's time to treat the root cause of pain! Not just the symptoms!

By: Dr Rob Rosenbaum

Every day we turn on the television or read an article online to find out there is a new treatment for our condition. The list of treatments that temporarily alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms we are feeling such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, stomach aches, fever, skin rashes, etc. is endless.

While these treatments may help us feel better in the moment, all too often the symptoms return right after the treatment is stopped. Many people are told they must take a medication forever, yet over time their body adapts to the medication and the uncomfortable symptoms return with a list of serious and life changing side effects that can even be worse than the original problem.

What if you began to look at your symptoms and conditions in a different light and took a different approach? What if your body is trying to tell you that it’s time to resolve the underlying cause of your symptoms and empower your body to heal itself?

When you are ready to address the cause of your condition, it is wise and effective to look to the master control system of the body first, the central nerve system.

Your central nerve system controls and coordinates every function of the human body, including every organ, tissue, and cell. It is essential that your nerve system communicates properly with the body to promote healing, ensure health and adapt you to the environment. Whether it’s digesting your lunch, getting rid of a seasonal cold, or reaching your fitness goals, your central nerve system must be on the job and functioning at optimum levels.

Dr. Irvin Korr holds a PhD in Neurophysiology and dedicated five decades of his life to understanding the central nerve system. Dr. Korr found that areas of the spine not properly functioning create interference in the central nerve system. This interference caused decreased immunity and malfunctions in digestion, infertility, focus, attention, and energy.

Too many people, and healthcare providers for that matter, address symptoms without taking a deeper look at the cause of your problem. Chiropractors understand and use a state of the art approach to address the function of your nerve system.

If you have a nagging symptom, chronic condition, or are looking to improve your health and reach peak performance levels, today is the day to make an appointment for a chiropractic evaluation. And when you do, don’t just take the symptom treatment approach. Make the Critical Transition to Lifestyle Care so you can begin living your best life every day instead of wondering how your symptoms will disrupt your life down the road.

If someone you know is struggling with unresolved symptoms and they are ready for a more permanent solution, refer them to our office. If you or anyone you know is in the Crosby, Huffman, Highlands, or Baytown area call/ or stop in for your chiropractic check up.

Vital Vacation Tips for the Crosby Huffman Baytown and Highland areas

Posted: July 6, 2016
By: Dr Rob Rosenbaum

Summer Time is vacation time for many of us. The kids are out of school and family trips are planned. In the world of The 100 Year Lifestyle, we call vacations Play Time.

Play Time has many benefits and may help prevent forced time off that is caused by a health crisis. When someone makes the transition from Crisis Care to Lifestyle Care with their chiropractic adjustments, they often experience higher levels of health. The same is true with people who plan for and build vacations into their lifestyle.

Here’s why…

Vacations may help you live longer - A study by the State University of New York at Oswego that surveyed 12,000 men between ages 35 and 57, found that men who go on vacation every year reduce their overall risk of death by 20%.

The Framington Heart Study indicates women who regularly take time off have a 50% lower risk for heart attack.

Vacations can raise energy levels - Experts from the University of Pittsburgh and Radboud University both said that people had more energy and felt more satisfied with life while on vacation.

Vacations free your mind - Robert Kriegel, author of “How To Succeed In Business…” believes many workers get their best ideas away from work and Los Angeles psychologist, Robert Butterworth told ABC, "The break will allow you to refresh your brain cells.”

Vacations can strengthen relationships - A Wisconsin Medical Journal published findings that women who take two or more vacations a year are less likely to be depressed, tired, or unhappy with their marital relationship.

If you believe you can’t take a vacation and there is too much at stake, in one way, you are right. There is too much at stake: The toll on your long term vitality, health and energy. Not taking Play Time can cause a buildup of stress that is unhealthy and can lead to all types of health problems.

Stress affects everyone differently. High levels of stress can contribute to heart disease, cancer, digestive issues and sleep deprivation. Stress can elevate cortisol levels and reduce the strength of your immune system. These are just a few conditions from a long list that can slowly sneak up on you over time or dramatically surprise you with the speed of their impact on your life.

If you use up all your sick days then have to dip into your vacation days, where is the win? You have the choice. Plan and take your vacation.

Before you pack your bags and hit the road, if you are in the Crosby, Highlands, Baytown, or Huffman areas make sure you schedule your spinal checkups to determine if you need to get adjusted. Going on a vacation with a healthy spine and nervous system can make your trip more enjoyable while also improving your health and well-being.

Go ahead, adjust your lifestyle and take a vacation. You will be glad you did.
